Across Palestine and Israel, communities are living through devastating violence, loss and injustice. Palestinian Christians have called on the global Church to respond not with silence or despair, but with courage, compassion, and action.

The Just Peace Coalition brings together churches and Christian organisations across the UK to respond to that call. Together, we are inviting individuals, churches, and communities to commit to working and praying for a just peace for all who call the Holy Land home.

This is not simply a moment of awareness. It is time to act.

The situation in Palestine is beyond urgent. Our Palestinian sisters and brothers are urging us to take action now before it is too late. This campaign contains information and resources to enable churches and individuals to take action, to deepen their engagement and to respond in costly solidarity.

Time to Act provides us with the opportunity to come together as Christians and to advocate for a just peace in Israel and Palestine – a peace characterised by the active promotion of justice and the nurturing of equitable relationship within and between communities so that everyone can live life in all its fullness. I encourage all Christians to join this campaign and to seek this peace and to pursue it with all the urgency that it requires.

What is The Just Peace Coalition?

The Just Peace Coalition is a collection of agencies, church denominations and networks who want to work together to see a just peace for all who call the Holy Land home. Membership is growing, but currently is made up of All We Can, Amos Trust, CAFOD, Christian Aid, EAPPI UK & Ireland, Embrace the Middle East, Justice & Peace Scotland, The Methodist Church of Britain, Quakers in Britain, SCIAF, Sabeel-Kairos UK, and the United Reformed Church. Bishops from the Anglican and Catholic churches are endorsing it, as are civil society groups both in the UK and Palestine. Why are we launching the Time to Act Campaign?

The situation is deteriorating rapidly, with increased settler violence and annexation in the West Bank, and a humanitarian crisis in Gaza caused by political inaction. Whilst we know there has been action within the church, we also know there has been silence; confusion and fear of speaking out. In response to our Palestinian sisters and brothers calling us to stand with them in active solidarity, we are launching the campaign now because we must not wait any longer: the situation is beyond urgent, and we believe we can have greater impact together through collective action.

Who are your Palestinian partners?

The campaign is guided by Palestinian partners and grounded in their perspectives, priorities and lived experience. We are working closely with a wide spectrum of Palestinian Christians representing many different denominations through the Kairos Palestine initiative, the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem, The Bethlehem Institute for Peace and Justice (part of Bethlehem Bible College) and other connections the members of the coalition hold.

Why are you focussing on Christians and Churches and not working with multiple faiths?

Our focus at this time is to support the moral voice of the churches to call on the UK Government to ensure that the government of Israel is held to account for breaches of international law and consequences for violations. There are over 27 million people in the UK who identify as Christian, and together with church leaders we can follow the call to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with God. We are in dialogue with those of other faiths who also campaign for a just peace in Palestine and Israel.

How would you respond to concerns about the campaign’s impact on different communities, including Jewish people?

The Just Peace coalition absolutely rejects antisemitism, Islamophobia and other forms of racism and xenophobia. We believe it is both possible and necessary to criticise the actions of any government, including Israel, while being clear that such criticism must never target Jewish people or draw on antisemitic language or ideas. Our commitment is to the equal dignity, safety and rights of all people, Israelis and Palestinians alike.

Why does the campaign appear to only focus on the actions of the Israeli Government?

The campaign is about bringing a just peace to all who call the Holy Land home, both Palestinians and Israelis. As a third state actor the UK government has a duty to seek the enforcement of international law and hold perpetrators to account for violations under that framework. We note and affirm the action the UK government has already taken action to proscribe and sanction Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups for their unlawful conduct. Without further measures addressing violations perpetrated by the Israeli government, the UK risks remaining complicit in breaches of international law and the continued erosion of the possibility of a just and lasting peace. All parties whether Israeli or Palestinian should comply with international law and we support all forms of accountability to that end.

Is the Time to Act Campaign just in the UK or also in other parts of the world?

We are currently prioritising the Palestinian Christian call to the Churches in the UK, which includes calling the UK Government to uphold international law and take action. We are in dialogue with similar movements in Europe and the US, and open to growing and collaborating with others.

How long will this campaign run for?

The Just Peace Coalition has committed to continue campaigning until there is a Just Peace for all who call the Holy Land home. We recognise that this will take costly solidarity and time, so we are committed to this campaign for the foreseeable future.
